Baked with Love
What inspired you to start Esperanza Cakes and Pastries?
The fact that I’m artistic. I love art and baking is a form of art. I baked my first cake when I was in class 4 and I loved it, so I started doing it as a hobby. Three years ago I realised that it is possible to do what I love and still make a living out of it.
Tell us more about your business and what it entails?
At Esperanza Cakes and Pastries, we bring joy to people’s lives through baked goods that range from a variety of cookies, cakes, doughnuts and many more. Clients have different needs so to accommodate everyone we offer a variety of flavors. We also have healthy pastries that are gluten free like cassava. I do not have a physical location yet so I operate from home then deliver the cakes to clients anywhere.

How did you hear about the Next Economy program and how has it benefited you and your business?
I heard about the Next Economy program from friends then I got curious to know what the program is about. I did some research and I saw it as a good opportunity to meet new people that I could do business with in the future and gain skills that will enable me to scale up my business. I applied for the program, I was invited for an interview, I was accepted then I started going for classes. TNE has exceeded my expectations, I have learnt so much like how to present my business, I thought I knew how but I didn’t, how to pitch for funds and also how to market my business effectively using social media.
Is this the path that you’ve always wanted to take? Even while you were growing up?
I never thought I would be a baker but I liked baking. I always knew I would follow a path that is artistic. I was employed for about 6 years but the job wasn’t fulfilling so I quit my job to do something that I’m passionate about and baking felt right since it was something that I had always had a passion for. That is when I made the decision to start my business 3 years ago.
What do you love most about the work that you do?
The fact that my job lets me be creative. Baking a cake design from scratch and seeing the end product, I can’t think of anything that is more fulfilling.
What keeps you going even when you want to give up?
I believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Anyone running their own business will tell you that there are tough days when you feel like you want to give up. The one thing that keeps me going is the hope for a better tomorrow. I have come to learn that each day brings its own different challenges and I accomplish certain milestones.
What would you say to all young people out there who are unemployed and are looking for white color jobs
Just start where you are. If you have an oven in your house for example start baking and sell to the people closest to you and slowly you will grow.
